The book “Portrait of Gradiška” was created as an accompanying publication to the art cycle of the same name, dedicated to the former appearance of Gradiška, its streets, buildings, spaces, and people.
The starting point for the book was the photographic archive of the Zavičajni Museum of Gradiška, which is the legacy of journalist Gojko Šerbula. During the research, more than 9,500 archival photographs were reviewed, from which scenes were selected as the basis for the creation of the artworks. In this way, photographic records of the past become a starting point for a new reading of the city and its visual heritage.
The book features reproductions of 25 artworks from the cycle — 19 paintings created in acrylic on canvas and 6 charcoal drawings on paper. Alongside the reproductions, the publication includes an introductory text by the artist, a text by art historian Siniša Vidaković PhD, Professor at the Academy of Arts of the University of Banja Luka, as well as a text by historian and Director of the Zavičajni Museum of Gradiška, Bojan Vujčić.
“Portrait of Gradiška” thus brings together archival photography, historical testimony, and contemporary painting, preserving a part of the city’s visual memory and presenting it through the artist’s personal interpretation.
